1. 102 y/o Dancer Sees Herself on Film for the First Time

One of the few non-Soundies  on the list. The book opens with a description of this video, and Alice Barker’s part in Soundies as an uncredited  dancer.

2.  Cow Cow Boogie (1942)

Except for a few cutaway shots Dandridge is on camera for the entire film, and she commands the screen completely.

3.  Take the ‘A’ Train (1941)

A Black metropolis envisioned by way of the Duke Ellington-Billy Strayhorn song, performed by the Delta Rhythm Boys.

4. Rigoletto (1945)

A pair of 1940s hepsters insist on bringing composer Giuseppe Verdi into the swing era, in one of the few performances of the era done in whiteface. From the trio Day, Dawn, and Dusk.
